The trope of the gentleman thief has existed for at least 100 years, as far as I know (the earliest source I know of that uses it are the Arsene Lupin books, from 1907).
It has appeared in a variety of contexts since then, from continuing in books to various movies and television shows. A couple of days ago, on Netflix, season 2 of Great Pretender actually come out in America, a show that also uses this trope. This show has been pretty well-received, as far as can be indicated from reviews (viewership data hasn't come out yet).
I just wonder what specifically about this trope is enjoyable, entertaining, etc. What is it about this trope that appeals to people?
